Coal tailings spill discolours Tulameen River
Interior Health says drinking water should not be affected
Interior Health says there is little or no impact to drinking water sources in the Coalmont and Tulameen areas after a weekend spill from a tailing pond at the Basin Coal Mine. IH says there are no regulated water systems in the area that draw surface water, only systems which draw well water which is not affected by the spill. For those residents who source drinking water directly from the Tulameen River, Interior Health anticipates the river has flushed clear, but if there is any discolouration residents should drink bottled water until it is clear. The Ministry of Environment is conducting samples from the Tulameen River around Coalmont and Princeton to confirm there is no impact on water quality.
