Coal Tailings Spill Into Tulameen River Double the Initial Estimate
An environmental review of the coal tailings spill into the Tulameen River from just over two weeks ago shows the Coalmont Energy Corporation significantly underestimated how much waste was actually spilled.
In fact, the review shows nearly 13,000 gallons of waste spilled into the river, which is twice the amount initially estimated by the energy corporation.
The review is part of an action plan submitted by Coalmont Energy to the Ministry of Environment on how the energy corporation should proceed, although those details have not been made public yet.
The spill from a tailing pond at the Basin Coal Mine turned the river black, although Interior Health says there is little or no impact to drinking water sources in the Coalmont and Tulameen areas.
