Kelowna Food Bank numbers up drastically

The Kelowna Food Bank is seeing it's numbers go up, substantially.

Executive Director, Vonnie Lavers says 61 new files have been opened, up from the 40 that were opened last May, which she says shouldn't come as a shock, considering the large jump in jobless figures last month, which are now sitting at around 15 per cent for people between the ages of 18 and 24.

Lavers says the erosion of the middle class is more apparent than ever.

"We're certainly now starting to see more people stuggling who have lost their jobs. Now, the business people themselves that have lost their companies are also coming to the Food Bank. Certainly the faces at the Food bank are changing. The people that need our assistance are changing."

Lavers says it's becoming increasingly difficult for the Food Bank to keep up with the level of demand needed by the community.
