Grow a Row campaign picking up steam

7/16/2012

A Kelowna chefs effort to help east the strain on the local food bank is being well received.

Jon Garratt says since the start of this year's grow a row campaign in April, the Kelowna Food Bank has had just over 2000 LBS of fresh food delivered to their doorstep by farmers and residents.

Garrett says for now it's mostly lettuce, radishes and what's in season...but now cherries are starting to hang off trees.

"Pay attention to the other side of the fence, you neighbors tree. If there is a tree in their yard that is producing fruit that they don't pick every year, it may be a good family event to pick that tree and bring it down to the food bank."

The Grow a Row campaign encourages people to grow a little extra for the Fod bank in their gardens.

Garratt launched a youtube video as part of the campaign titled Hunger Awareness.

His goal is to have 45,000LBS of produce donated.
