Highlands Retirement Residence Fire: UPDATE

A massive fire at Highlands Retirement Residence this morning began in one of the housing units.

Kelowna RCMP Cst. Kris Clark says the resident tried to put out the flames with an extinguisher, however was unsuccessful and the blaze quickly spread.

Clark says all 65 residents have been accounted for.

"People including residents and  staff members were treated for minor smoke inhalation. All residents, due to heat and smoke, are being taken to North Glenmore Elementary School so they can be in an air conditioned facility."

Crews have knocked down the fire and are in the mop up stage.

No word on the extent of damages.
