Plain cigarette packaging a possibility

Canada could be next in joining Australian when it comes to adopting plain packaging of cigarettes.

As of December 1st, cigarettes and tobacco products in Australia will be sold in plain olive green packets with graphic health warnings, such as pictures of mouth cancer and other smoking-related illnesses.

Jerilynn Mackie, who is Kelowna based, is the health promotions coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society:

"With Australian doing this, it really makes it good for other countries to be able to   also be able to have their governments have this type of packaging."

The World Health Organization says more than one billion people around the world are regular smokers, with 80 per cent in low-and middle-income countries.

"We are hoping that Health Canada will essentially look at this and say we need to have stronger images on these cigarette packs", Mackie added.
