$28.5 million for two schools in SD23
A dollar figure has been announced for a new school in West Kelowna and an expansion for a school in Kelowna.
The BC government will invest $28.5 million dollars into the new Mar Jok Elementary and the expansion of Okanagan Mission Secondary.
Central Okanagan School Board Chair Rolli Cacchioni is quite pleased by the announcement.
"We've got portables at both those places that sorely need it. We are looking forward to that. Also at OKM we have a current enrolment down there of 1,060 way over capacity. We've got portable on site there. Extremely pleased with these two capital projects."
The new elementary school will help to address district enrolment growth by creating space for 460 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
The addition to Okanagan Mission Secondary will create 300 new student spaces plus a Neighbourhood Learning Centre with an upgraded drama room.
Construction will begin in the spring and wrap up next fall.
