Okanagan College trades get $28 million dollar boost

9/21/2012

The Okanagan College Campus here in Kelowna has been training students in various trades like welding, heavy-duty mechanics, electrical and plumbing since the 1960's and now, the trades facilities will get a $33 million dollar overhaul.

The Honourable John Yap, Minister of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology was on hand at the Campus Friday morning to make the announcement.

"This announcement that we're making here today reflects our commitment to ensure that we prepare for the coming jobs that are coming, making sure that our students are getting the skills, the training in the trades that are needed."

The Provincial Government is funding $28 million dollars toward the Trades Renewal and Expansion Project that will see their trades facility renovated and expanded over the next four years.

The project is seeking a minimum of LEED Gold Standards as far as energy usage and environmentally friendly to help reduce the carbon footprint.  The project will also reduce operational costs by almost $220,000 once net-zero energy is achieved.

Construction is slated to begin immediately and wrap up some time in spring 2016.
