Kelowna Chef gearing up for Canadian Culinary Championships


A local chef who will compete against the best of the best from around the country says he's ready for the Canadian Culinary Championships.

Chef Mark Filatow, owner of the Waterfront Restaurant and Wine Bar, won the Gold Medal Plates Vancouver and will now represent the province.

Filatow isn't sure if being at home will be much of an advantage.

"So much of it is a mystery and that would be the greatest challenge.  The grand finale I will definitely have an advantage because I'll know so many people there and hopefully they'll be cheering me on."

He thinks Kelowna, which will host the event for five years, is the perfect location for the CCC's.

"My understanding is that they maybe want to keep it here longer if they can.  That will be interesting to see.  Having traveled a bit in Europe and other places, the ingredients that are grown here are second to none in the world."

Filatow is looking forward to the sold out blind tasting Canadian wine event on Friday where chefs must combine local ingredients from Kelowna to pair with the wine.

The grand finale takes place on Saturday.
