Stubborn Grass Fire Continues to Grow
Two homes evacuated
Two homes at the Rise were evacuated about 4:45 due to the growing grass fire. It broke out just before 3pm Tuesday afternoon in the area of the switchback on the way to The Rise.
Vernon Chief Keith Green says the fire is very close to two homes so they did a tactical evacuation. Crews are working to protect the homes and they have a dozer guard dug in.
He says the problem is the fuel is really light and there are changing winds, smoke is also a challenge for the crews.
Fire Information officer Kayla Pepper says gusty winds are not helping the situation and the fire has now grown to 20h. She says forestry is assisting, they've sent more crews to assist. 21 firefighters from the Vernon Fire Zone are assisting Okanagan Landing and Vernon firefighters, as well BX Swan Lake Volunteers. Air support is also helping, two helicopters are bucketing water and four air tankers are dumping fire retardant on the perimeter trying to prevent the fire from continuing to grow. She says at last report it was spreading on the north flank.
