Assessments to be done on RCMP members involved in West Kelowna shooting

8/3/2012

The health and well being of RCMP officers involved in wild police chase in West Kelowna is being evaluated.

A total of 5 officers are currently going through a Fitness for Duty Assessment after a shooting on Tuesday.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says they have an obligation to the public to make sure the officers are stable enough to come back to work.

"The assessment itself is partial of making that determination so that the officers can resume full operational duties."

Moskaluk adds it isn't often when Canadian police officers have to use their firearms.

"The high majority of police officers will serve full careers of 35 years plus without firing a shot but this is real life.  We are where we are with society today and these shooting incidents do happen and we've had a couple of them happen in Kelowna within the last 14 months."

He says as the case unfolds in court, people will have a better understanding of the risks police officers can face day in and day out while on the job.

These assessments stem from the wild police chase and shooting that took place in West Kelowna on Tuesday.  Three people were arrested.
