West Kelowna planning for the future of businesses in the district

West Kelowna council has approved a plan to support the creation of local business and encourage local job opportunities.

Members voted in favour of the 2013-2014 Economic Development Strategy which features a course of action for Business Development.

Mayor Doug Findlater says they will focus on the marketing and promotion of the area.

"We have a really great industrial area on Stevens Road in West Kelowna.  It's an area we want to enhance and attract more business too.  In fact we'll be looking for additional lands that might be used in the longer term to create more opportunities for light industrial."

He adds West Kelowna has more than just retail stores to offer saying industrial plays a major role.

"What we do have that we feel is very very strong is light industrial areas here. I've been touring facilities here and many of these places have been here for 30, 40, 50 years.  They've got a work force that is very well paid and they're doing some sort of a light manufacturing process."

The strategy supports the creation of local business climate, encourage job opportunities, expand business tax base, and worth with regional partners to support business.
