Kelowna residents show solidarity to U.S. Womens March

Hundreds of people gathered in Kelowna at the Sails Saturday morning in support of the Women’s March on Washington.

The Washington demonstration calls for the protection of women's rights, safety, health, and families, a day after Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States.

Brooke Vasconcelos attended the Kelowna march with her young daughter.

“We came to show our support and solidarity for all people all over the world that we won’t stand for discrimination of people of color, because of their gender, ethnicity, religion,” she said “We won’t normalize the things that Trump has said, or stood for, or represented”.

The Kelowna rally featured a number of speakers, including Westbank chief Roxanne Lindley and had an open mic where others could speak.

Rainer Wylkins attended the Kelowna march wearing a pink knit hat, associated with the "Pussyhat Project".

“I thought in support of taking back the word from Donald Trump and this misogynist type of thinking was worth making a statement when you’re a tall, large guy like me walking around,” he said “so people see the hat and that it’s not just women that support women, that people support women”.

The demonstration is one of dozens that took place in Canada, the United States, and several other countries.
