Real Estate Board warns of continuing rental scam

Real pictures and descriptions used in fraudulent rental property web posts

Realtors in the Okanagan are asking people to be highly aware of a rental scam that's been picked up on over the past year.

The Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board says it's counted four recent instances where someone has copy and pasted photos and information from a legitimate rental ad, and turned it into a fake posting on a rental site.

When people express interest, they're asked to forward a deposit before they pick up their keys, a deposit that's immediately lost when the meeting never materializes.

The Board says anyone looking for a rental shouldn't send money to anybody with first doing an on-site, in-person inspection.

It's also asking people with active listings to look online for any fraudulent duplicates.
