Pot Shop loophole in West Kelowna to close

Council to look at bylaw change

West Kelowna city council is taking the first step towards a new bylaw closing a loophole that has seen half-a-dozen 'pot shops' open in the city.

Mayor Doug Findlater says they've heard concerns from the public about the proliferation of medical marijuana dispenseries which are operated by non-profits.

"So this will require those organizations, not only pot shops, but I think there's a few others like a Re-Store, to have a business license and they are, for all intents and purposes, a business so they'll go through that regulation process," says Findlater.

He says after first reading Tuesday, the proposed bylaw change will go to a public hearing – but even if it's adopted and pot shop owners will require a business license, the RCMP says these dispensaries are still illegal.
