Buy a tree and help grow Kelownas urban canopy
The City of Kelowna's annual NeighbourWoods program is back.
The idea is to grow the city's urban canopy by offering trees to residents at a discounted rate – this year, 500 trees are up for sale.
Urban Forest Technician Andrew Hunsberger says you can choose from six varieties including a big one the city uses a lot on boulevards.
"The Bloodgood London PlaneTree is a fast growing tree if you put the water to it and it gets lots of sun. It's a nice big, beautiful tree that provides lots of shade," says Hunsberger. Others include the Sunburst Honey Locust, Ivory Silk Lilac, Autumn Blaze Maple, Regal Prince Oak and Northwood Red Maple.
He says trees will go for for $40 plus GST. Here's how:
- View the six tree descriptions online at kelowna.ca/parks under NeighbourWoods.
- Order the tree of choice starting Monday, March 27 at 8:30 a.m. online at kelowna.ca/parks under NeighbourWoods or by calling 250-469-8800 to pay by credit card, or by visiting staff at Parkinson Recreation Centre (1800 Parkinson Way) where cash, debit or credit is accepted.
- Pick up the tree at the NeighbourWoods event on Saturday, April 22 (Earth Day) at the Mission Recreation Park Arboretum, 4105 Gordon Drive between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Residents must bring ID or proof of Kelowna residency and a vehicle that’s appropriate for transporting a tree.
To register online, residents must have an online account through Active Living and Culture (Rec-Connect) or can set one up in advance by calling 250-469-8800. There is a limited number of each tree species. A total of 500 trees will be available for purchase until sold out.
The program is restricted to Kelowna residents and is limited to one tree per household. Since 2010, residents have purchased approximately 3,000 discounted trees to plant on their properties.
