B.C. Senator and Olympic gold medalist Nancy Greene Raine has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

The 73-year-old, who represents Thompson-Okanagan-Kootenay, is having her thyroid removed at Kelowna General Hospital today, which will be followed by four to five weeks of additional treatment to manage the spread of cancer cells.

Raine is Canada's most decorated ski racer, having won gold and silver in the 1968 Winter Olympics. She is currently the Director of Skiing at Sun Peaks Resort.

She says she plans to return to her duties in the Senate as soon as possible.
