40yearold man died April 1st
The death of a 40-year-old man in a Kelowna RCMP jail cell last month is still under investigation.
In an email to AM 1150 News, the Independent Investigations Office of BC says the initial focus of their probe is to determine if there's a connection between the man's death and the actions of police – and that's still on going.
On March 31st, the man was arrested and taken to jail in connection with a single-vehicle off-road collision on McCulloch Road.
After complaining about pain – he was taken to hospital, cleared by hospital staff just before 11:30 pm, and taken back to jail, where shortly afte 2:00 pm on April 1st, he was found unresponsive – RCMP and paramedics could not revive the man and he was later pronounced dead.
IIO spokesperson Aidan Buckley says since September 2012, the office has been notified of over 12-hundred incidents involving police – and in about 23% – they've continued investigating with jurisdiction released in the remainder.
