Adjustments made to Bennett Bridge as water rises

Officials say adjustments have been made to the William Bennett Bridge because of increasing water levels in Okanagan Lake, however they are not concerned with the integrity of the bridge.

Officials say adjustments have been made to the William Bennett Bridge because of increasing water levels in Okanagan Lake, however they are not concerned with the integrity of the bridge.

Brian Symonds with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources says the bridge was built to withstand various water levels.

“Operators of the bridge actually have made some adjustments to the tension to the cables,” he said during a phone news conference on Tuesday “it was designed with the intention to be able to respond to changing lake levels, particularly when they go outside the normal range.”

He added that the bridge is even beneficial by acting as a breakwater and minimizing waves during strong winds, such as those seen Tuesday night.
