Robert Bjarnason and his wife Stephanie Bjarnason had just won a couple of bucks at the casino when they stumbled upon the shooting outside the Delta Grand Hotel on August 14, 2011.
Robert Bjarnason testified they were walking down Water St. when he heard what sounded like fireworks and saw two people dressed in black, with their faces covered, chasing a white car as they discharged bullets towards it.
“When the vehicle came to a stop, I recall an individual approach the driver’s side and fire in the direction of the driver’s door, window area.”
He said the shooter had both hands on the long gun- one on the trigger and one on a handle near the barrel- and was no more than a couple of meters away from the driver’s side door of the car he was shooting towards.
Bjarnason guessed he heard about 40 to 50 shots fired in total.
Stephanie Bjarnason told the courtroom she thought a movie was being filmed.
“I looked down and saw a vehicle and some people with guns and my first thought was they were making a movie.”
Stephanie Bjarnason ran back into the casino and told people to stay inside, while Robert Bjarnason hid behind a tree.
Another witness, Dianne Hofer, says she was on put on hold when she called 9-1-1.
She was driving on Cawston Rd. towards the direction of the hotel with a friend and her friend’s child, when she thought she heard firecrackers being used by kids.
“And then I looked ahead further and saw, kinda, looked like fire coming out of the end of a gun and very fast.”
She said she made a U-turn and turned into Ellis St. while trying to call 9-1-1. During this time, Hofer said she saw an SUV speed past her on Cawston Rd., away from the hotel.
While still trying to get a hold of 9-1-1, she drove back towards the hotel after her friend said there might be injured people that need help.
“There was 2 passengers- 1 driver, 1 passenger- in the car, then the trunk of the Cayenne was popped open,” she testified “and there was a person slumped over, kinda, front ways, like they’re on their stomach, over a bush and they were in white clothes and I could see blood on their clothes.”
Hofer said she got through to an emergency dispatcher after she parked near the hotel, while her friend started to do CPR on the person that was slumped over.
Red Scorpions gangster Jonathan Bacon was shot to death while he was sitting inside a white Porshe SUV outside the hotel. Hells Angels Larry Amero, Independent Soldiers James Riach and two women, who were with him at the time, were also injured.
