Fire restrictions go into effect May 19th

Larger open burns will be banned until October 15th

Flooding is still a concern in our region, but it won't be long before the forests become tinder dry again.

Starting this Friday, the size of open fires will be restricted to help prevent human-caused wildfires – Category 2 and 3 open burns are banned.

Max Birkner Information Officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre says "the ban includes the burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time, stubble or grass fires of any size, and the use of fireworks or burning barrels."

The ban covers all BC parks, Crown lands and private lands and includes the Kelowna area.

Birkner says don't worry if you're camping this long weekend –  smaller campfires are still allowed, along with cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

A ticket for violating the ban is $1,150.
