Get a look at Phase 1 of Kelownas Integrated Water Supply Plan

Tuesday June 20th at South Kelowna Elementary School

Residents in the south-end of Kelowna are invited to an information session Tuesday to see details about Phase 1 of Kelowna's Integrated Water Supply Plan.

City Project Manager Ron Westlake says this phase looks at hooking up the Southeast Kelowna Irrigation District, and the South Okanagan Mission Irrigation District, with the city's water system.

Westlake says the project aims to end years of water quality advisories in the Southeast Kelowna water district.

"Their drinking water is coming from the headwaters of Hydraulic Creek and has seasonal fluctuations in water quality that would cost considerable amount of money to treat, and so this project would bring clean water – that does have treatement as well – but from Lake Okanagan up to serve the domestic customers of the Southeast Kelowna Irrigation District," he says.

The $63-million project has received $43.9-million in funding from the provincial and federal governments, and Westlake says the money from senior levels of government means ratepayers will see direct cost savings, in addition to the project wrapping up 10 years faster than without government funding.

Westlake says the ultimate goal is to amalgamate Kelowna's 30 different water systems into one broader water utility.

The information session will be held at South Kelowna Centennial Park (South Kelowna Elementary School) starting at 4:30 pm Tuesday, June 20th.
