Walk the Beach march set for August 27

Event aimed at raising awareness to keep foreshore accessible

A date has been set for an event that would bring awareness to the issue of docks and fences built along the foreshore of Okanagan Lake, that illegally block public access.

Brenda Bachmann is organizing Walk the Beach Kelowna, a march that's meant to signify and raise awareness for the city's stretch of lakeside beaches.

"This is not at all a protest – marches have nothing to do with that. This is celebrating the foreshore and the area of lakefront that people can legally walk," she said.

"And it's a family-friendly event. We hope to have people with paddleboards, canoes, kayaks following along beside us."

The event is happening on Sunday August 27, starting in City Park at 1:00.

She says as long as the debris from flooding has been cleared by then, everyone will meet downtown at 1:00.

"We're going to start in City Park, and then go under the tunnel and then walk the foreshore from Mushroom Beach to Rotary Beach, if we can get that far. We do realize that in some areas we'll have to go swimming," she laughed. "Or go further inland and walk around on the streets a bit."

Mayor Colin Basran has said he's written a letter to the province asking for help on foreshore enforcement – as it's under BC jurisdiction.
