Online page set up by couples neighbour who helped discover fire
A neighbour who's started an online fundraiser for a couple whose house burned down this week, was also the one to call 9-1-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
Elizabeth Sheyev says she'd driven down the road to check out a downed power line, and came back to a much different scene.
"I stopped the car – I didn't even park it – and dialed 9-1-1. And as I'm on to 9-1-1, my neighbour came running around screaming about the smoke and fire," she said.
"And by this time, I'd heard two explosions. I don't know if those were oxygen tanks or not, because Kory is on oxygen."
That's homeowner Kory Bradshaw, who's in Toronto with his wife Renee, waiting for a lung transplant to treat his cystic fibrosis.
That ordeal prompted Sheyev to set up a GoFundMe page to support the family, which as of late Thursday had raised over $15,000.
"They're absolutely astonished and bewildered by this outgoing kindness from people who have been donating constantly," she said.
"There's so many people that probably want to give, but they don't have they money. And I keep trying to tell people, you have no idea how fast $5 donations add up."
She also says this type of tragedy has brought the neighbourhood closer together.
"As a neighbourhood, as a group just on that hillside, we've all made a point of exchanging contact information," she said.
"Instead of just a handful of us, we're all banding together and making sure we've got sprinklers and hoses out. That's what it does to people."
