Weekend heat wave on the way

Temperatures into the mid30s Saturday and Sunday

It's going to be a hot weekend.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau says a strong upper ridge of high pressure will result in a brief heat wave over southwest BC.

"Temperatures are going to be climbing into the mid-30's, peaking on Sunday," says Charbonneau. "Then we'll start to see things cool off a little bit as we get into the start of next week."

She says Sunday is the day we could get close to breaking some records.

"For Kelowna, the record for Sunday is 36.5 degrees – our forecast for Sunday is 35," says Charbonneau."Down in Penticton the record is 36.1, and in Vernon it's 37.0. All of those were set on June 25th, 1992."

She says the wind could pick up as well, but it's not expected to cause any serious problems for flood protections along Okanagan Lake.

"Anytime we have hot weather, we start to see the pattern of winds pick up over the lake, especially in the late afternoon in the 20 to 30-kilometre-an-hour range. It's typical of what you'd see on these sunny, fair weather days – so we're not expecting any significant wind through this weekend," she says.

She says temperatures will moderate noticeably on Monday, with a chance of showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
