Firefighters respond to gas station fuel spill

Nearby homes evacuated for hours

West Kelowna firefighters were cleaning up a fuel spill at the Petro Can gas station at Ross Road and Bartley Road yesterday afternoon.

It happened right around noon, when firefighters found a powerboat had leaked more than 100 litres of gas into the hull and engine of the vessel.

As a result the gas station and nearby streets were evacuated and shut down for several hours, eventually re-opening at about 5:30.

Both the Kelowna department's hazmat team and provincial contractor helped in the cleanup.

That involved using a vacuum truck, which suctioned up the gasoline and transferred it into a holding tank.

The gas will then be re-used once its been tested.

As well, West Kelowna crews responded to a fire in a home at Concord Road and Hudson Road on Saturday night.
