Students thanked those who fought Joe Rich wildfire

Black Mountain Elementary School students showed their gratitude to the firefighters and first responders who kept their neighbourhood safe this summer.

"Our students work on their social emotional learning every day, part of which means learning to show gratitude," says Janet Williams, principal at Black Mountain Elementary. "As a school, we wanted to honour the brave people who fought the wildfire that threatened so many homes in our area."

The assembly to honour everyday heroes took place, Thursday morning, before students laced up for their annual Terry Fox Run.

"These young learners are great examples of contributors to the local and global community," says Moyra Baxter, Chairperson of the Board of Education. "By spending a day recognizing heroes in their community and running for a national cause, they're showing a tremendous commitment to good citizenship and we're very proud of their efforts."

The students thanked first responders personally and enjoyed a visit from Joe Rich fire chief, Ben Wasyliuk.

Emergency personnel who fought the Joe Rich wildfire included firefighters and volunteers from both the Joe Rich Fire Hall and Kelowna in a coordinated effort to keep the flames away from hundreds of homes in the area.
