Grade 5s created Animal Tales as part of literacy program
Grade 5 students at South Rutland Elementary School will be signing and selling their book titled "Animal Tales" this Saturday December 16th.
It's all part of the Dynamite Book Project – a literacy program that gives students a chance to create, market and sell their own books of stories.
Lynn Stevens with Kelowna's Big Heart Publishing is a program partner.
"We go into the elementary schools and we introduce imagery – primarily animals and insects. There are also information cards that we give to the students, and they get to choose one and write a short story about it," she says.
Stevens says all proceeds from book sales goes directly back to the school to support programs, trips and equipment.
As a publisher, Stevens says the program is rewarding for her company as well – she says the parents of one of the students were grateful for the project, which finally got their son reading, and now he wants to be a writer.
The book signing and sale will be held at Okanagan Regional Library in Rutland Saturday, December 16th starting at 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
"Animal Tales" contains 35 stories written by the students and a couple of the teachers as well.
