Bikesharing proposed for Kelowna

Councillors will hear the idea at Mondays meeting

A Toronto-based company is looking to set-up bike-sharing in Kelowna.

City council will look over a proposal Monday by "Dropbike" which is already operating in several Canadian cities.

The idea would be to place 500 to 1,000 bikes around the city using existing infrastructure, like streetlights, as drop-off stations eliminating the need to build costly new ones.

Using a smart-phone app, you'd unlock a bike and rent it for about a dollar-an-hour – Bluetooth and GPS tracking would be used to find any bike that doesn't make it back to a rack.

Dropbike, a for-profit company, says it doesn't need any subsidies to get going.
