Day of Mourning in Rutland

Ceremony honors victims of workplace deaths.

On Saturday, April 28th, WorkSafe BC and the North Okanagan Labor Council will be hosting an annual Day of Mourning ceremony in Rutland’s Ben Lee Park at noon.

The event honors those who have lost their lives while on the job, and raises awareness to promote safe working conditions.

Trish Chernecki of WorkSafe BC says there were 158 work-related deaths in BC alone last year.

“87 were caused by occupational disease mainly resulting from exposure to asbestos, and 71 resulted from traumatic injuries.” says Chernecki.

Canada was the first of over 80 countries to declare the annual remembrance on April 28th following the passing of the Workers Mourning Day Act in 1990.
