Is care centre in the cards for West Kelowna

West Kelowna Mayor holding out hope.

Is an urgent care centre in the cards for West Kelowna in the not so distance future?

Mayor Doug Findlater hopes so.

Health Minister Adrian Dix says 10 new urgent primary health care facilities will be open this year.

Findlater says the need is great.

"We have 50 thousand people on the westside, about a third of them are over 60 which is heavier users of health care services. We know that this would reduce the impact on Kelowna General Hospital".

Findlater spoke to Dix about it last fall.

"We are hoping he's remembering that meeting with West Kelowna. I have met him previously and he was very congenial when I we met him in September and he did remember the discussion. We hope we have made an impression if he has anything to do with it".

Findlater says the issue has been on the table since 2007, when then MLA Rick Thorpe first brought up the need.

Interior Health has already purchased land while the Regional District has set aside two million dollars for such a facility.
