Road construction season starts

Asphalt maintenance and upgrades.

Road maintenance on Kelowna streets starts this weekend.

Roadways Design Technician Bruce Dacre says crews will be out at four locations.

"What we are doing is we are placing a product on the surface which will help to seal it and add some life cycling to the asphalt."

The road treatment consists of spraying an agent on the asphalt and then applying a fine layer of sand which is then worked into the surface.

The lifespan is between 5 to 6 years, compared to the practice of milling out the asphalt and then replacing it, which lasts between 15 and 20 years.

Dacre says work crews will need your cooperation to get the projects done.

"If we come along on a project and there are cars there, the project is in a halt position until I get the cars removed. It sets everything back".

Failing to do so will result in your vehicle being towed.

Two of the projects are in the Wilden area, with two more in Rutland.

Weather permitting, the anticipated road closures include:

  •          Rifle Road (Longhill Road to Silver Place)
  •          Rio Road (Clear Pond to Upper Canyon Drive)
  •          Upper Canyon Drive (Rio Road to Wilden Ridge Drive)
  •          Franklyn Road (Hwy 33 to Houghton Road)
  •          Fitzpatrick Road (Findlay Road to Rutland Road North)
