Shelter provides water and sunscreen for homeless
Kelowna's Gospel Mission has seen an influx of people trying to escape the heat.
Volunteers Manager Sonja Menyes says the first real heat wave catches many by surprise – they're not used to putting on sun screen, staying hydrated or wearing their ball caps – so heat stroke is a concern.
"The good thing is we're open to the public from 7:00 in the morning until 6:00 at night, so people can come in at any time, and we've got air conditioning; we've got water all the time, and of course, the three meals and snacks a day" she says.
Menyes says the Mission's outreach worker also makes the rounds every day.
"She's always out in the morning, checking on people making sure they're okay; giving them wake-ups; handing out water and sandwiches. She also hands out sunscreen, socks and ball caps and also talks to them about getting into housing, which is important," she says.
Menyes says the shelter is also open for showers and has laundry facilities.
She says if you can help out – the Kelowna Gospel Mission always needs supplies like water, sunscreen and shampoo.
The shelter provides 90 beds – and Menyes says they've been full up the last few nights.
