Rutland Transit Exchange entering Phase 2

Road expansion expected to be completed sometime this summer

Kelowna residents got a look at the second phase of construction for the Rutland Transit Exchange at an open house Wednesday afternoon.

The project will extend Shepherd Road between Roxby Road and Rutland Road North, allowing for improved transit services and pedestrian access in the area.

Regional Project Manager Andrew Abiston says the project, which has been in the works since 2012, should be complete soon.

“The timeline to start would be probably sometime this summer, July or early August, and complete by fall 2018,” says Abiston.

In addition to the road expansion, the project also covers improvements to Rutland Centennial Park.

“We’re undergoing the third phase of Park development,” says Senior City Project Manager Andrew Gibbs. “We’re going to add a couple of features to the playground, a few paths for moving around, and there’s also going to be a cultural garden in the southeast corner.”

The work being done on the Park is expected to be complete by spring of 2019.

The first phase of the project finished in 2013. Last year, $1.3 million was put towards the project, which costs a total of $2.8 million to complete.
