Local fundraisers still need ALC approval

City council is putting its support behind a local winery.

Kitsch Wines on Neid Road is getting set to host two major fundraisers this year – on July 14th for the local women's shelter, and on August 25th for Ronald McDonald House.

Both events are set to have more than 150 guests, and therefore go against new rules established by the province's Agricultural Land Commission last year.

Mayor Colin Basran says these types of events help market Kelowna.

"This is a part of Kelowna that we're trying to sell to the world, and so where better to have an event to allow a winery to celebrate their newest vintage, than on their property overlooking the lake and the city, amidst a vinyard? This is a pretty special property," he said.

Councillor Gail Given was the only vote against the plan, and says functions with close to 500 people cross the line.

"My biggest concern with this is the public who can be impacted by the noise, hasn't been given an opportunity to speak to this. Nor will they be able to speak to this. I will always support the right to farm versus neighbourhood concerns, when it comes to actual farming activity," she said.

"I understand this is a promotion of their business, I understand that it's not-for-profit, I get that."

Winery owner Ria Kitsch told council that things like parking and noise will be appropriately handled.

"We can accomodate many vehicles. We can do the math – there's an entire ring road. Also for our events, we have shuttles in place, and planned, and have done that in the past," she said.

"Moving onto the noise, both events are meant to end before 10:00. So they're very much in accordance with bylaw, and respectful of that."

Council's approval isn't the final step, as the plans still need the sign-off of the ALC.
