Peachland expands dog beach area

If you see a buoy in the water, thats a nodog spot

The District of Peachland has expanded their amount of dog-friendly beachfront.  Up until now the District’s shoreline property consisted of 3 dog areas, with the rest ‘no dogs allowed.’

The script has been flipped.  Now the beachfront has 3 designated areas where dogs aren’t allowed and the rest of the beach is dog-friendly.

“If there are swim buoys, in-water swim buoys, that is the marker to say it is a designated swim area(no dogs),” said Cheryl Wiebe, Director of Community Services for the District of Peachland.  Signs will also be placed to show where the pooches can and can’t go.  “We just created a brochure and I am getting that uploaded on to our website, and that actually delineates where the dog-prohibited areas are,” said Wiebe.

Wiebe explained that creating more beach space for dogs has been in the works for years.  “I think it was 2011, we’d already initiated a campaign to create off-leash areas and create the 3 dog-friendly beaches that’d we had, but there was still a desire to have more.”

“I would hazard a guess that we are one of the more dog-friendly communities, particularly in the Central Okanagan,” stated Wiebe.  A reputation that is likely to grow after this latest move to expand dog-welcome beaches.
