Fundraising begins for youth treatment program

Will provide 16 spaces for drugaddicted youths and their families

In an effort to provide treatment for anyone under the age of 19 struggling with drug addiction, Bridge Youth and Family Services in Kelowna has launched a campaign to fund a new treatment program.

Over the next two years, they hope to raise $10 million in order to provide 16 spaces where drug-addicted youths can stay with their families while getting help.

Celine Thompson, Director of Bridge Youth and Family Services, says youth drug addiction is an issue that has been underfunded and overlooked for far too long.

“I think we’re starting to see some commitment and attention from both the provincial and federal governments,” says Thompson. “But I think that they’re in catch up mode right now. We’re just in a position where we refuse to wait another minute.”

Right now, only 45 of these spaces exist in BC, with none in the Central Okanagan.

“We’re really confident that we have the commitment and compassion of this community, so I fully anticipate that families, individuals, and local businesses will support us,” says Thompson.

To help boost fundraising efforts for the program, a rooftop camp out and block party at the Kelowna Yacht Club is planned from July 20th to 21st.
