Illegal dump site cleared out in Peachland

Took 23 volunteers two and a half hours to clean up the area

23 volunteers got together in Peachland this past Saturday to clean up a large illegal dump site off Trepanier Road.

In the bushes just off Trepanier Road, garbage and makeshift structures were spread out in a clearing. There were also parts of a drug lab, including acids, aerosols, and propane tanks, that a hazmat crew had to remove before the cleanup could begin.

The culprits were a pair of squatters who had been hiding out in a stolen RV in the area for five months, until they were arrested for mail theft this past winter, leaving behind the mess.

“Unfortunately this kind of thing is all too common, but this cleanup was a roaring success with over 23 volunteers, including representation from the Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance, Mayor Cindy Fortin, and the Peachland Lions,” says volunteer coordinator Keith Nixon.

It took volunteers two and a half hours to clean up the dump site, during which they completely filled an entire 40-yard dumpster with garbage.

Anyone who sees an illegal dump site in the area is asked to report it by filling out a survey at regionaldistrict.com/reportillegaldumping or call the Regional Waste Reduction Office at 250-469-6250.
