Pavement Patty was installed beside Rutland Elementary School Thursday morning
An optical illusion aimed at promoting school zone safety has made its way to Kelowna.
Pavement Patty, a weatherproof, skid-proof, 3-D vinyl sticker of a girl playing with a ball out on the street, was installed on Craig Road beside Rutland Elementary School on Thursday morning.
Up close, she looks like a flat, stretched out kid, but from a distance, she looks real enough to startle drivers into slowing down.
Jennifer Smith, Senior Program Manager with Preventable, says Pavement Patty has already led to positive results in other BC cities.
“Pavement Patty was originally done in West Vancouver in 2010, and the response to her was tremendous,” says Smith. “The purpose behind the installation was to get people’s attention and get them talking about school zone safety.”
Pavement Patty will be staying on Craig Road from now until the end of the weekend.
A recent province-wide survey reports that 80 percent of school staff and parents have witnessed speeding in school zones, and 55 percent have seen a car come extremely close to hitting a child.
