Only one retail outlet in BC to buy legal marajuana on October 17

Just because legislation legalizing marajuana goes into effect October 17, does not mean you'll be able to buy it at a licenced retail outlet. The fact is, there will be only one BC Government store open and it'll be in Kamloops. The licensing process is far from over with up to 100 applications under review. We can expect a lenghty process where unlicenced retail operators are shut down and legal operators are approved .

Marajuana activist Dana Larson worries that a promised government run online system will be more expensive for many reasons, pushing users to buy their supplies on the street. He says possession of illicit cannabis is against the law. If you're caught with pot not purchased from a licenced outlet or grown legally under the home grown rules, you could be charged.

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth says this is one of the biggest public policy shifts in decades and simply wll not happen overnight.

Dana Larson was a guest on the Early Edition with Phil Johnson.
