BC Government to invest in new Kelowna facility for women and children fleeing violence

Kelowna Womens Shelter is deighted

The BC Government has announced the creation of the Women's Transition Housing Fund.

It'll invest more than 700 million dollars over the next ten years to create 1500 transition housing, second stage housing and affordable housing spaces for women and children fleeing violence.

Up to 40 of those spaces will be in Kelowna in a mix of both short term and long term accomodation for vulnerable women and their kids.

Karen Mason, Executive Director of Kelowna Women's Shelter, says, "We find women who stay at our transition house can't find safe affordable housing so working with the government on a project like this is fantastic."

A timeline for construction of the Kelowna facility has not yet been set and a site has not yet been found

These homes will be delivered in 12 projects around the province. It's the first time the government has made an investment in transition housing in more than 20 years.
