Supportive housing planned for Rutland

Kelowna's latest supportive housing project is going up in Rutland.

On Thursday, the BC Government announced a deal to buy 49 residential units in a new building planned for 130 McCurdy Road.

The property is the current site of the Knights of Columbus Hall. The non-profit has sold the land to the Culos Development Group and, in return, will receive a new hall and two residential units in the future supportive housing building.

"Through strong partnerships, we are starting to make progress with more than 230 supportive homes completed or underway in Kelowna," said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

"We know there's more work to do. People experiencing homelessness deserve the opportunity to build a better life and we will continue to address the need for supportive housing here and in communities throughout the province."

Some of the units will be set aside specifically for younger people between the ages of 19 and 24. The Canadian Mental Health association will oversee the day-to-day operations, providing round the clock support to residents.

"Providing homes with appropriate supports is fundamental to supporting the health and well-being for people who may have been homeless for a long time," said Shelagh Turner with the Canadian Mental Health Association.

"Housing stability is the first step in clearing the way so people can thrive and move towards an improved quality of life."

Construction is slated to begin this summer. It's expected the project will be completed in Spring 2021.
