No more Waterways houseboats on Mara Lake

The company has gone into receivership

When you think about Mara Lake near Sicamous, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

If you said houseboats, we're on the same wavelength.

Waterways Houseboats was one of the largest companies of its kind in Canada and has been a large part of the local Sicamous – Mara Lake tourism industry for 50 years.

But today, they're in receivership and the houseboats have been removed from their moorings.

Sicamous Mayor Terry Rysz says this has everyone's attention.

"We want to make sure that the general public knows that Sicamous is still open for business. We've got other houseboat companies in this community. We're still vibrant, we're still welcoming. There's alternatives here."

Apparently, about 50 people lost their jobs on Tuesday.

Bookings for this summer have been softer than usual we're told, and a nervous CIBC bank called the Waterways loan.

The company blames devastating floods back in 2012 for putting Waterways on its financial slide.

Here is the official statement from the Waterways.
