Tolko to temporarily close Kelowna operation UPDATE

Employees were informed of the decision on Tuesday

Another major shutdown in the BC lumber industry and the union responds.

United Steelworkers Kelowna President Pat McGregor was shocked.

"I found out yesterday five minutes before it was released to the media. So, right out of left field. Didn't see this one coming. The members have already taken enough hits. Gotta keep kicking people when they're down I guess."

McGregor has yet to talk to the company. That'll happen before the week is out.

"Without a doubt the employer is sending a message to the government and they're using us as the conduit. The NDP are a labour friendly government and we supported them. So, I think the industry is sending that message through us and it's having a great affect on our membership."

McGregor says union membes in Kelowna are eligible for Employment Insurance and some of them have never had to apply before in their careers.

Tolko Industries has announced its Kelowna operation will be closing temporarily from August 6th to September 15th.

“The high cost of logs and weak market conditions are still impacting our operating footprint in British Columbia,” said Vice President of Solid Wood, Troy Connolly in a release. “Although we prefer to keep our locations in constant operation, we must manage the business responsibly and ensure we are sustainable for the future.”

According to Connely, 140 employees were informed of the decision on Tuesday.

“We do not make these decisions without a lot of consideration,” said Connolly. “We know we have great people working at this location and this is in no way a reflection on them or their commitment. However, we’re seeing a lot of challenging industry conditions in B.C. right now, which could continue for some time.”

Tolko Marketing and Sales Vice President Pino Pucci assured customers that Tolko’s Marketing and Sales team will continue to support its customers and minimize any impacts.

"Our customers are understanding of current market conditions and aware of our ongoing commitment to serve them.” said Pucci.
