Okanagan winemaker Harry McWatters passes peacefully

McWatters spent 50 years in the BC wine industry

Iconic Okanagan winemaker Harry McWatters has died. The 74-year-old passed away in his sleep on Tuesday morning.

McWatters spent 50 years in the BC wine industry, coming to the Okanagan in 1980 to found the Sumac Ridge Winery in Summerland. He is widely toasted as the godfather of BC wine.

"Harry made a very indellible mark, not just on the BC wine industry but internationally" said West Kelowna MLA Ben Stewart. "He's going to be missed for his vision and foresight and inspiration for so many of the new wineries here in BC."

Winemakers and politicians from throughout the Okanagan fondly remembered McWatters Wednesday, taking to social media to voice their condolences.
