Opposition growing to West Kelowna development

Online petition launched against Blackmun Bay

The Blackmun Bay development in West Kelowna is formidable – 4 separate, 9-storey buildings with condos and townhomes – also a 120-room hotel and a marina with room for over 240 boats.

It's made it to public hearing in August or September – but the Casa Loma Community Association wants to kibosh it.

Association Director Rodney Wright says it's way too big – and access is limited.

"It's one road in and out – and what's recommended for fire protection is that if you have 100 houses, you need two exits. Well, with this development – and with the proposed development which will happen in Westbank First Nation lands further along – our number of housing units will increase to over 1,000," says Wright.

The project on adjacent WFN land calls for 268 condos – which Wrights says – will cause even more traffic congestion on both Sneena Road – and the Bennett Bridge.

He says it's also completely against the Official Community Plan set up for the Casa Loma area, and is really outside the areas the city has identified for high density development, which are neighbourhoods like Westbank and Gellatly Bay.

The online petition is at www.gopetition.com.
