Kelowna RCMP dismiss 40 of reported sexual assaults since 2017

On average, police forces in BC dismiss just 15 percent of allegations

Data from Statistics Canada shows the Kelowna RCMP are dismissing sexual assault complaints at a rate far above the provincial average.

Over the last two years, local police have discarded 40 percent of reported sexual assaults as 'unfounded', meaning investigators don't believe a crime was committed or attempted.

According to federal statistics, police forces in BC dismiss just 15 percent of allegations on average.

Of the 169 incidents reported to Kelowna RCMP since 2017, 69 have them have been deemed baseless. That's more than both Vancouver and Victoria combined, where 56 cases have been classified as unfounded.

AM 1150 News has reached out to both Kelowna RCMP and the City of Kelowna for comment.

Earlier this year, the detachment came under fire for aggressively questioning an indigenous teenager who came forward with a sexual assault complaint.
