A steady stream of cement mixers rolled in and out of downtown Kelowna as a major development hurdle is reached at the site of the future UBC Okanagan campus.
What is being called the largest continuous concrete pour outside of the Lower Mainland, the “major milestone” will take about 22 hours to complete.
Officials with the project said an estimated 70 trucks will supply approximately 5,600 cubic metres of concrete.
“A continuous concrete pour is a critical component of the tower foundation and will ensure uniformity in the structural base,” a media release from the development team read.
Construction of the 43-storey tower has been plagued with setbacks. Several nearby buildings have been demolished after showing cracks in the foundation.
Lawsuits have been launched over damage to a neighbouring affordable housing complex, Hadgraft Wilson Place.
