An upset and change of banner for the Similkameen – South Okanagan – West Kootenay.
Helena Konanz – a lawmaker in Penticton – sweeping the seat for the Conservatives, a gain from traditional New Democratic territory.
Konanz snagged 53 per cent of the vote over the Liberals Juliette Sicotte at 40 per cent.
The seat was redrawn for this election and historically skewed NDP, but the party’s national vote collapsed and it showed in the South Okanagan.
NDP candidate Linda Sankey placed third with just 16 per cent of the vote.
Konanz win means another vacant seat on city council in Penticton after Amelia Boutlbee became a Conservative MLA in the fall provincial vote.
Plus, Coun. James Miller is currently on paid leave as he awaits a December trial for alleged historical sex crimes in Ontario.
A byelection in early April to replace Boutlbee saw Jason Reynen fill her role.
Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield had this to say about the results:
“On behalf of the City of Penticton, I want to congratulate Helena Konanz on her election as Member of Parliament for Similkameen-South Okanagan–West Kootenay.
Helena has been a dedicated member of Council and strong advocate for our community during her 10 years of service. Her hard work, leadership, and passion for this city have made a real and lasting impact.
We are proud to see a member of our Council take on this important new role at the federal level. We look forward to working with Helena in her new role as MP and wish her every success as she continues to advocate for the region.
I would also like to thank all the candidates who put their names forward in this election. Win or lose, stepping up to represent our community takes courage and dedication.”
