Premier David Eby expects a full public inquiry will take place around what led to Saturday’s deadly attack at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver.
Speaking to media Tuesday morning, Eby said the criminal justice process won’t be able to answer all the questions the public has about what led to the killings and didn’t mince any words when speaking about the accused.
“I think this individual is a mass murder,” Eby said Tuesday. “I think he should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. There are lots of individuals with mental health issues … this man made the decision to rundown children and seniors.”
The suspect, Adam Kai-Ji Lo, has had several mental health interactions with police in recent years, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
He faces eight counts of second-degree murder and VPD said more charges are expected once all the victims are identified.
Eby also announced plans to establish an independent commission to explore best practices for enhancing event security.
The goal is to ensure people feel safe while enjoying outdoor celebrations this summer.
Eby wants the recommendations published in June.
